WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley, Jr., today delivered his State of the Navajo Nation address to the spring session of the 20th Navajo Nation Council.

Among many topics, the President reported on recent trips to Chicago and Washington, D.C., where he reached out to urban Navajos and members of other tribes, and testified on proposed cuts to the FY 2006 Bureau of Indian Affairs budget.

³We see the federal government asking those who have the least and who have given the most to give much more,² the President said. ³If the Bush budget is approved, our Navajo people will see funding cuts in social services, education, health care and scholarships to our young people.²

The President reported on what the Executive Branch is doing to bring revenue in, mentioning plans to soon hire a gaming director and working to keep mines on Black Mesa from closing and causing the loss of hundreds of Navajo jobs.
